Feedback
In the beginning of the semester, you will set your ‘Semester Intentions’. At the end of each semester, you will complete a self-assessment based on your performance on your semester intentions. Team SyBBURE will review, give insights, make comments, and make adjustments to scores, if needed.
Feedback Overview
Scoring is from 1 (bad) to 5 (great) on:
Your participation in subgroup – to score highly in this category, you must come prepared for your subgroup meetings. These meetings should be a priority for you because they let you get feedback on your research. You should come to every meeting prepared with all the material you are responsible for completed before you arrive. You should pay attention when others are talking, ask questions, and be nice to everyone else in your group. Attendance is taken and participation is tracked in all subgroups.
Your research progress – to score highly in this category, it needs to be clear that you are spending the required amount of time and focus on research. You should be able to state clearly and briefly what your specific aims for the semester were, and whether or not you achieved them. You should have an understanding of the motivation of your project, and display interest in the questions you are answering.
Your contribution to your VIX team – to score highly in this category, you must be an active member of your team – all the other members should be able to list your specific contributions. If you miss any ThinkTank meetings or your team meetings outside of ThinkTank, then update your team with what you have done to contribute to the project that week. This should also be reflected in your weekly updates when applicable. Help with presentations, design, and completing activities.
Your contribution to the SyBBURE community – to score highly in this category, you should add value to the SyBBURE community. You can do this by leading your subgroup, doing announcements at ThinkTank, setting up and cleaning up after meetings, taking pictures at events, being a GidHub Guardian, organizing social events, etc. Give constructive feedback to your peers and play well with others.
Criteria:
Planning/attending subgroup social activities
Planning/attending community engagement activities
Presenting to SyBBURE, when opportunities arise
Contributes to community in Slack
Slack activity level
Your accountability – to score highly in this category you must complete your obligations to SyBBURE. You should come to all required meetings on time and communicate in advance when you will miss or be late (subgroup attendance is scored in the subgroup category, all other mandatory meeting attendance is scored here). If you sign up to help with any activity you should meaningfully contribute and follow through on your commitments. Turn in everything on time (project proposals, class schedules, presentations, etc). Communicate on Slack regularly; if you take a long time to respond to Team SyBBURE it is noted and tracked over the semester. Be helpful to SyBBURE, not a burden.
Criteria:
Thinktank attendance
Time card submission
New student project proposals
New students finding a lab
Filling out form requests sent out through slack
Filling out upcoming semester participation plans form
Join semester VIX channel in Slack
The consequences of your scores:
A ‘5’ is hard to get. A ‘2’ (or less) is rare. If you get one, that means that something is going pretty wrong with your participation in the program. We track the ‘2’s (or lower) that students get, and if a student gets 1 or more ‘2’s (or lower) on 3 separate feedback forms, they are asked to leave the program. If you get a ‘2’ (or lower), you should schedule a meeting with your subgroup leader to discuss how you can fix the situation. If you take no action to schedule this meeting, that speaks volumes as to how you prioritize the program.
Those who have received one or two 2’s, you are able to nullify one 2 by earning 3’s or better for a full year’s worth of feedback or by earning 4’s or better for a full summer’s worth of feedback. To nullify both 2’s, this process will need to be doubled.
Example:
Summer 2024: get a 2 in community and research
Summer 2025: get a 2 in subgroup and VIX
Spring 2026: get a 2 in subgroup
You are asked to leave the program.
The self-assessment form will be sent to you when necessary.
