Design Guide

We have created a design guide broadly aimed at anyone trying to get started in design. You can use this guide and the activities we’ve created or modified to explore, form teams around, understand, ideate, prototype, and validate your ideas.

Video Resources

If you are new to VIX and/or design, we have overview videos just for you!

Example VIX Goals

The overarching goals of VIX are for each of you to achieve the following:

  • learn the design process (and time management)

  • gain experience working in teams (everyone loves teamwork! start getting better at it now!)

  • learn skills (prototyping, fabrication, design, marketing, empathy)

  • identify and solve problems (build critical thinking)

  • generate innovative ideas (be creative)

  • build confidence that you can pursue an idea you may have in the future

  • identify interests

We aim to give you the flexibility to work on projects that meet your individual goals. These self-determined goals could include a wide array of motivations including, but not limited to, those in the following list.

  • doing something creative               having fun

  • solving a real-world problem          helping others

  • starting a business                         bettering yourself

  • building credentials                        making life easier

  • creating some you need/want        inventing the future

  • learning a specific skill                   optimizing a process

  • making something better                pushing boundaries

  • putting your spin on something

Example VIX Projects

Have an idea or need an idea? Check the VIX Project Bank. The team formation spreadsheet each semester also usually has some space for suggested projects or brainstorming.

Some previous projects can be found on Box (check their roadmaps or final videos). There are also a few previous project videos on the SyBBURE Website.

If you are struggling to come up with a project, remember that your project can start out vague! It’s okay to go into a semester with the project “learn graphic design” or “make kinetic art” without knowing exactly what you want to do yet. Take some time in the beginning of the semester to look for inspiration and figure out how you will accomplish your goals.
